The cornea helps to bend and focus light in order to create an image on the retina. This process of bending and focusing light is called refraction. When the cornea and the eye are not matched you get a refractive error. The three categories of refractive errors are - myopia, hyperopia and astigmatism. Myopia, commonly referred to as nearsightedness, refers to the difficulty of seeing distant objects as clearly as near objects. Hyperopia, commonly referred to as farsightedness, refers to the difficulty of seeing near objects as clearly as distant objects. Finally, Astigmatism refers to the distortion of the image on the retina. Astigmatism is caused by irregularities in the cornea. It is not uncommon for people to have a combination of myopia and astigmatism or hyperopia and astigmatism. LASIK surgery uses a computer-controlled laser to correct refractive errors by precisely removing small amounts of corneal tissue to allow the eye to focus properly.
